La Struttura Assente

Stas Gulkowski joins us for his second appearance on the Architect-US Portfolio Challenge with his project called La Struttura Assente. Last time, he submitted his project called Brama, which aimed to create a gateway to Parade Square, the main square in Warsaw, Poland. The square was designed and built together with the main actor of the site – the Palace of Culture and Science, which is a functioning historical monument and the city’s icon. For the project, La Struttura Assente, the parcel of the project is located in the central, historical section of Milan, along Via San Marco. The longitudinal shape makes the site very interesting, though problematic. Within the areas exist a short remnant of an old ‘naviglio’ (it. canal) from the time when Milan looked much more like Venice today. The site has historical value because of the presence of Leonardo Da Vinci’s master hand.

The main task was to design an architectural archive with an exclusive area devoted to the late Umberto Eco – the revered 20th century Italian writer. «La Struttura Assente», the title of the project, was imported from his literary work. The archive itself was designed underground, hence the titular ‘Absent Structure’ has a special meaning for the design.

Stas has always been interested in designing cultural spaces in large cities since he studied at Politecnico di Milano. Now he is working at SPAN NY in New York City and he has been enjoying his work as a designer in the city of his dreams.
