Toby Eccleston
Toby is a British architect who graduated from the University of Liverpool with Bachelor’s Degree (Hons) in Architecture. He was the winner of the Liverpool Architecture Society Undergraduate Student Awards in 2018. Toby’s work experience previous to obrARCHITECTURE includes studios such as Oldfield Design, James Tottey Partnership, BDP Sheffield, and HOK London.
obrARCHITECTURE’s Selected Projects
Garret-Gates House – San Diego, CA
An existing single-family home in the Mission Hills/Little Italy neighborhood will be remodeled as part of this project. The current split-level home is encircled by views of the surrounding natural environment and situated inside a canyon. The project’s objective has been to blur the boundary between the outer environment and the internal residence ever since the clients brought up the name «treehouse.»
The project makes the most of its surroundings while yet giving the clients the seclusion they need thanks to the construction of balconies, the addition of huge windows in certain rooms, and a complete interior makeover. You get the impression that you are in the middle of a forest thanks to the design, which includes a floating wet room and a fantastic reading nook with views of the trees.
In order to generate contrast, the interior was redesigned using lighter, simpler hues, and the exterior was completely refurbished, with new wood siding painted black to replace the old.

UCSD Price Center West and Dirty Birds – San Diego, CA
Located at University Centers, the center of the UCSD campus, the Price Center West and Dirty Birds is a renovated interior and exterior facility that serves as the focal point of campus activity. To accommodate the almost 30,000 visitors each day, there are a plethora of activities and events available, ranging from dining establishments and retail stores to conference spaces and student resource centers. University Centers’ main goal is to provide the UCSD community with high-quality resources such as activities, services, and facilities that enhance and promote student learning and the campus environment.
Renovations to the interior dining area with Dirty Birds, new gender-inclusive restrooms, a new outdoor dining area, and new seating and dining areas for public use are all included in the scope of work. Exterior work includes single swing hydraulic doors that open to the interior dining space, landscape, hardscape, fencing and fire pits

One Door North – San Diego, CA
Fred and Tammy Peihl, the owners of The Smoking Goat, one of the most popular bistros in North Park, requested obrARCHITECTURE for assistance with the design of their new 5,000 square foot, two-story eatery. The idea behind One Door North, which is located next to The Smoking Goat, is to bring the wonderful outdoors indoors. The restaurant is divided into three distinct sections: the main bar area in the middle, the section facing the street with banquettes, and the section with tents in rear. The restaurant’s rear wall is covered with floor to ceiling murals of forests, and it is bordered by semi-private 11-foot eating booths and canvas tents in the form of a camp.
The tables and walls are made of hand-carved, live-edge wood from a sustainably logged Wisconsin forest, with themes drawn from the mountains, lakes, and coasts the Piehl family has seen. The Piehls collaborated with obrArchitecture to ensure that the architectural language of the area mirrored the culinary experience they aimed to produce.
